Choose your lift

Which stair lift should you buy?

Start with your staircase shape, then choose the chair and features that work for the rider. A provider must confirm measurements and suitability before you order.

Straight stair lifts

For one uninterrupted indoor flight. Compare a new unit with a professionally reconditioned option. General range: $2,900–$8,000, new or used.

Curved stair lifts

For bends, winding treads, or a continuous ride across a landing. The rail is fitted to the staircase. General pricing: $12,000 and up.

Outdoor stair lifts

For exterior steps. Buy equipment specifically intended for outdoor exposure, not an indoor chair with a cover. General range: $7,500–$10,500.

A straight rail or a custom curve?

One straight flight? Compare straight models first.

A straight lift is usually the lower-cost category. Compare the standard seat and manual swivel with powered swivel or footrest options if operating them would be difficult.

Turns or landings? Compare a continuous curved lift.

A curved system can carry the rider around a bend without changing chairs. Two straight lifts may be another proposal for separate flights, but only if transferring between them is suitable for the rider. Compare the full installation, not just the chair price.

Buy, recondition, or rent

Choose how to pay for the equipment—not just which chair.

Buy new

Compare the exact model, seat fit, powered options, parts coverage, labor warranty, and service arrangements. New equipment is worth comparing when you expect long-term use or need specific features.

Buy reconditioned

A professionally supplied used straight lift may reduce the initial cost. Ask about the age, battery condition, replacement parts, installation, and written warranty. A used curved rail should not be assumed to fit another home.

Ask about rental

For temporary use, ask whether a suitable straight-lift rental is available. Compare installation, monthly charges, minimum term, maintenance, and removal against a purchase. Rentals and stock are not guaranteed.

Before you order

Features worth comparing

Seat and transfers

Try the seat if possible. Compare height, armrests, controls, belt, and the swivel position at the top landing. Ask which power features are useful for the intended rider.

Space and parking

Compare folded dimensions, rail overrun, and any folding rail needed near a doorway. Confirm the quoted configuration leaves the required space for other stair users.

Warranty and aftercare

Ask who handles installation and later repairs, what parts and labor are covered, and what a call-out or replacement battery costs. Get those terms in writing.
